I first started writing stories when I was eight years old. I took a notebook with me to help pass the time when my family attended football and basketball games to see my sister cheer (even then I knew I was destined to play in the band, and cheerleading was not in my future). When I was twelve I received my first journal, the prophetic first words written in my childish cursive: “Today I got you.” (deep, right?). When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said “a writer.”
But then I was bitten by the history bug, and when I first stepped on the hallowed grounds of UNC Chapel Hill I immediately declared myself a history major without a second thought. And I loved my history courses at Carolina. But that yearning to write things down, to create stories, never really left me.
With historical fiction, I get the best of both worlds. I enjoy researching the historical settings my characters live in, and weaving my stories around that factual information.
I married my best friend and college sweetheart, and we live in beautiful North Carolina. When not in front of the computer screen, you’ll find me outside in my garden or roaming around with a camera in hand, ready to get the perfect close-up shot of a flower or leaf, or maybe a few of our two lovable mutts Lucy and Molly.
